Autumn Olive Farms is an original film that was written, directed, and filmed by Nicole Martorana.

The film features the story behind Autumn Olive Farms, a family farm located near Waynesboro, Virginia that specializes in heritage breed Ossabow Island and Berkshire pigs, as well as South African Boer Bok goats.

Shot on Super 8 film for the 2013 Super Gr8 Film Festival in Harrisonburg, Virginia meant that this project had some unique challenges. As per the regulations of the festival, each filmmaker receives one reel of film (about 3 min, 20 sec when shot at 18fps) and cannot edit or see the film before it premieres at the festival.

As such, this project required intense attention to detail through prior storyboarding, careful shooting without mistakes, and precise shot-by-shot time notations to ensure the best chance for matching up audio with the finished film.

Audio had to be recorded separately and was allowed to be edited before submitting tracks to the festival organizers, who laid them on the final film. Nicole interviewed Clay & Linda Trainum, owners of Autumn Olive Farms, about their journey as family farmers and preservationists of heritage breeds, recording and editing the audio into a final track. She also worked with local composer Bryant Keith Grant to achieve a film score that fit the intended mood of the film; the score was recorded and submitted separately.

Original score by Bryant Keith Grant.
Starring Clay and Linda Trainum.
Poster Photograph & Design by Nicole Martorana.
